Tamil Nadu to Establish Greater Flamingo Sanctuary in Dhanushkodi

Exciting news for bird lovers! Tamil Nadu is set to become a haven for flamingo enthusiasts as the state government announces plans to declare Dhanushkodi, the picturesque ghost town at the tip of Rameswaram Island, a Greater Flamingo Sanctuary. This initiative, part of the 2025-26 state budget, aims to protect the region’s rich biodiversity and enhance conservation efforts.

Greater Flamingo Sanctuary – A Crucial Stop for Migratory Birds

Dhanushkodi plays a vital role in the Central Asian Flyway, serving as a critical stopover for migratory birds. Recognizing its ecological importance, Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu, while presenting the DMK government’s fifth budget, emphasized the need for a dedicated sanctuary to safeguard migratory wetland birds.

Greater Flamingo Sanctuary boosting Conservation Efforts

In addition to the flamingo sanctuary, the government has announced the creation of a Raptors Research Foundation, backed by a ₹1 crore allocation from the Endangered Species Conservation Fund. This initiative will focus on protecting birds of prey such as eagles, hawks, and vultures, which are increasingly threatened by habitat destruction and environmental toxins. The foundation will implement conservation strategies and raise community awareness, particularly in regions like the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Madurai-Arittapatti, and Pallikaranai.

A 1000-Hectare Biodiversity Park in Tiruvannamalai

Another significant highlight of the budget is the establishment of a biodiversity park spanning 1000 hectares in the Chengam region of Tiruvannamalai district. Historically significant in Sangam literature, this area has suffered habitat degradation. With an initial investment of ₹10 crore, the Melchengam Biodiversity Park will focus on restoring endangered native tree species, promoting eco-tourism, and advancing conservation efforts. The park will also offer nature tourism experiences, blending green spaces with educational initiatives.

Preserving Tamil Nadu’s Coastal & Marine Resources

The budget further allocates ₹50 crore for the creation of a Marine Resource Foundation, dedicated to protecting Tamil Nadu’s 1,076 km coastline. This initiative will prioritize mangrove conservation and sustainable fishing practices, ensuring long-term marine ecosystem health.

Additionally, six beaches, including Tiruvanmiyur and Uthandi, are set to receive Blue Flag certification in 2025-26, backed by a ₹24 crore investment. This certification guarantees compliance with strict environmental and safety standards, enhancing Tamil Nadu’s reputation for sustainable coastal tourism.

Eco-Friendly Infrastructure & Sustainable Development

The Tamil Nadu government is also focusing on sustainable infrastructure, with:

  • ₹70 crore allocated to convert 700 diesel buses to CNG, reducing air pollution.
  • ₹250 crore earmarked for upgrading 500 km of forest roads, improving forest management and supporting tribal communities.

Through these initiatives, Tamil Nadu reaffirms its commitment to conserving natural ecosystems and promoting sustainable development, ensuring a greener future for the state and its wildlife.
